I've been in the affiliate marketing space for almost 20yrs and have done well both as an affiliate and an affiliate manager. I created sites early on (late 90's) when I just had an Amazon banner up and even as recent as November, 2016 I sold a subscription box affiliate website. I've managed small to large multi-million dollar affiliate programs (Buyseasons, Lenovo, etc...), sit on the board of Affiliate Summit the largest affiliate marketing conference.

Although this space changes a lot, some things stay the same. I hope there's something you can take from this.

What can the super wealthy teach us about having a secure financial future?

The Thin Green Line: The Money Secrets of the Super Wealthy by Paul Sullivan. “Wealth Matters” columnist for The New York Times reveals the decisions, behaviors, and worldviews that lead to true wealth. For the better part of the past decade, Paul has written about and lived among some of the wealthiest people in America. He has learned how they save, spend, and invest their money; how they work and rest; how they use their wealth to give their children educational advantages, but not strip them of motivation. He has also seen how they make horrendous mistakes.

Firsthand, Paul knows why some people, even “rich” people, never find true wealth, and why other people, even those who have far less, are far better off financially. His book shows how others can make better financial decisions—and come to terms with what money means to them. It lays out how to avoid the pitfalls around saving, spending, and giving money away and think differently about wealth to lead a more secure and less stressful life. An essential complement to all of the financial advice available, this “timely…smart” (Publishers Weekly) guide is a welcome antidote to the idea that wealth is a number on a bank statement.

Paul and I discuss;

  • The thin green and the distinction between being rich and wealthy
  • Why it was important for readers to understand the difference?
  • The meeting he talks about in the beginning of his book with Tiger 21 members.
  • How the wealthy use debt strategically
  • The misconception on how the wealthy view taxes
  • The wealthy’s spending philosophy
  • How the wealthy teach financial literacy to their kids
  • and much more!

Buy low, sell high. It’s a simple idea that a bored accountant used to create a multi-million dollar business, and one that he says you can replicate as a side-hustle. Ryan Grant graduated from college, pursed a career in accounting and quickly found himself wanting more in life. It started while in college, Ryan started shopping for sales in popular retail stores and buy items in bulk. But instead of purchasing what he liked, Ryan came armed with a secret weapon…an Amazon seller’s account and his phone.

Ryan would find sale items in Walmart, Target and Toys R Us, then used the Amazon seller app to compare them to online prices.

Eventually In 2013 Ryan quit his full-time job paying over $50K per year to pursue making a full time income selling online. His business now does over 7-figures in sales per year and he sits down with the Marketplace to discuss just how he did it.

After serving a total of four prison sentences for crimes ranging from burglary to armed robbery to drug dealing. Dave Dahl turned his life around during his last stint and rejoined the family bakery shortly after his release. He went on to co-create Dave’s Killer Bread.

Dave had to accept that—at least for Dave Dahl—there’s no “happily ever after”. But he finds great satisfaction in “fighting the good fight”, one day at a time. He believes that forgiveness of self and others is one of the keys to inner peace and personal growth. But it’s only one of many lessons he’s come away with through all of his struggles—and triumphs.

Dave’s Killer Bread, a family endeavor, was sold to Flowers Foods in 2015, leaving Dave with a void to fill. He spent the next 2-plus years building what is perhaps the largest collection of African tribal art in the world. During this time he lived a semi-hermetic lifestyle. Now, with a healed heart and mind, he steps back out on a mission to help inspire others to find their own brand of success.

“‘Good Seed’ is much more than a killer bread recipe. Having been a ‘bad seed’ and destroying everything in my path as a troubled young man, I finally found the path of humility and teachability. It gives me the courage to fall down 7 times, and get up 8.”

The equation is simple. Soul + swag x New Orleans = Dee-1. He has created his own lane in Hip-Hop by making music that motivates anyone on a mission to win the game of life. He is the voice of those underdogs who grind with a purpose.

Dee-1 is Real, Righteous, and definitely Relevant. I enjoyed talking with the LSU about hisviral hit “Sallie Mae Back” which you hear in the opening of the podcast and he  discusses quitting his job as a middle school teacher to rapping full time which has since taken off!

Dee-1 also known as David talks about the man you see on stage is the same man he is off of it and you have to respect how pure that is. He also talks about turning down a record deal provided by Cash Money/Young Money Records because his message was so different (he does not curse in his music).

Dee-1 and I also cover…

  • His upcoming Tour, The SlingShot David Tour
  • His life growing up in New Orleans
  • How he handles money and still driving his 98 Honda even after signing to a major deal.
  • Faith
  • How he handles the pressure of the music business mentally and spiritually?

We renovated them, all the units there, and brought them back up to, back then it was 2012 code: new bathrooms, new floors, new kitchens and all that stuff,”. Blount then joined the soft-pretzel franchise Auntie Anne’s. He opened two stores in West Palm Beach and one in Jensen Beach, Florida. After building and operating the franchises for four years, he sold the stores to focus on real estate. He purchased them for a little under $700,000 and sold them for about $2M.
